The International Year of the Salmon North Pacific Opening Event
The IYS North Pacific Opening Event—hosted by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) and the Pacific Salmon Foundation—was held at Jack Poole Plaza in
The partnership between Portugal and Spain, regarding the management of the resources of the Minho river, dates from the end of the 19th century.
On May 24, it will take place under the Migra Miño-Minho Project (http://migraminho.org/?lang=pt-pt), another initiative to restock salmon. The breeding adults are caught in the Frieira Dam, in the upstream Minho river (Galicia) and afterward the reproduction is promoted under the guidance of the Head of Unit for the Conservation of Nature of Xunta de Galicia, Pablo Caballero Javierre.
The sustainability of the river and its resources will also be ensured if children on both sides of the border are involved, know the resources and learn how to protect them so that they perpetuate themselves in time and continue to exist available for generations to come. This year, to celebrate the International Year of Salmon, children from Tui (Galicia) and Valença (Portugal) were invited to participate actively in this initiative. Together they will once again learn that the future of the Minho River is in their hands.
The event will be guided by Portuguese and Spanish naval authorities (Capitania do Porto de Caminha and Comandancia Naval del Miño).
